   Le HSDPA (high speed downlink packet access) est une technologie accélérant le débit des données autres que la voix sur tous les réseaux de téléphonie mobile UMTS (universal mobile telecommunications system). Avec un débit réel de 3,6 Mbps (mégabits par seconde) en flux descendant, qui pourrait ensuite atteindre 10 Mbps, le HSDPA permet un débit nettement plus rapide que l’UMTS standard pour les services de téléphonie mobile liés au texte, à l’internet et au multimédia (web, courriel avec pièces jointes, transfert de fichiers, photos, musique, vidéo, etc.). L’utilisation de cette technologie devrait se généraliser courant 2007. En mars 2007, on compte 100 réseaux HSDPA déployés dans 54 pays, surtout en Europe. Le protocole HSDPA sera ensuite complété par le protocole HSUPA (high speed uplink packet access) permettant d’optimiser le flux ascendant. Les deux protocoles HSDPA et HSUPA font partie de la série de protocoles HSPA (high speed packet access). En 2008 ou 2009, un nouveau protocole combinant les deux protocoles existants devrait permettre de fournir un débit symétrique.
